So I put in The Supremes in Pandora to listen to whatever playlist they'd give me (which is amazing because I practically know every song), and... is it bad that all I can see is Schtein serenading Osgood with half of these love songs? XD Especially Can't Take My Eyes Off of You by Frankie Valli

he might, but unfortunately for him he has a terrible singing voice. He’s got a raspy smoker voice and he can’t hit notes to save his life.

Delia would probably still find this charming.

I'm sorry if this has been asked before (and I didn't go back far enough XD) what kind of music does Doc listen to? I saw the old movie posters he had in his room, so it sort of piqued my interest.

He doesn’t listen to much music, but when he does it’s mostly motown type stuff. Soul, R&B, Bues. Or Sinatra type stuff. His favorite band is The Supremes. He thinks classical music is boring, and he pretty much hates modern rock/electronic/rap.

I’d tell you how the original script went with Dr. Schtein in solitary but I actually mined that for use later on in the comic. So basically never tell people your ideas ever even if you don’t think you’re gonna use them, because you might!

That’s a writing tip, I guess?

The first donation wallpaper I ever did. I put it up sometime around the beginning of chapter 2. Little did I know it would be over a year or so until I got to the part of the story that the wallpaper was conveying. And by the time I got there I had rewritten that part of the comic fairly heavily.

Second image is a wallpaper I never finished, but it’s a pretty cute idea and I’m tempted to try and rework it into something.

third was supposed to be a new cover image for chapter one. That fire is taking forever to do! But it’s sort of satisfying to work on in a tedious way…

since they’re all wearing masks I’m having to continually remind myself to push the body language. It’s like there’s only two acceptable modes for panelling in this part. Pulled back so you can see all of them or super pushed into their faces so you can see the eyes.

Learn from my mistake, don’t put your characters in gas masks if you really like drawing facial expressions. It’s boring to draw!

Also I’m shit at drawing circles abluhbloohoohoo

So the United States seem to be in bad shape. How are other countries fairing, and is there still an incentive to want to emigrate to the US in this world?

depends on the country, there’s a lot of back and forth pushing and skirmishes related to expansion of political ideology like always. A lot of communist regimes, capitalist meddling, dictators eager to please either side. You know. Like you do. I’d really rather not get specific outside of the comic. People still immigrate to the US. Delia traveled to the US for school. Some people are running from wars, others it’s business reasons, some people just think the US sounds really rad. Not much different.

Are the character's origin locations relevant/did you choose them for any specific reason? I ask because I just checked out the updated character sheets on the site and it excites me to no end that Schtein's from my hometown.

It depends on the character. Usually I write their backstories with no real location in mind outside of vague notions of accent and then afterwards I have to look for an area that has everything I need for them. It’s kind of fun, actually, I get to read up on local history and neat stuff like that!

Since String Theory is an alternate timeline to ours in way, & the govt controls a lot it seems, is there any social media or things such as video games?

A lot of technology in the US is rather stunted and behind in various ways. Especially entertainment technology. There’s not really a public internet presence. There is a military and college network, email and usenet exist but are pretty limited in use. Obviously people have cellphones, but smart phones aren’t a thing. So, no social media, basically. That’s probably not even a phrase that exists. Videogames are an expensive import, most Americans are lagging behind with decades old systems.

Excuse me, Mr Grundy, my friend and I were planning on doing a comic together, based on a story we did in art class. It started out a joke to get out of writing a serious story, but then we both contributed a lot to it and it kinda gained a life of it's own. Do you have any tips for us? We're drawing it by hand, and have a little bit of a story planned out, but mostly we're gonna take the story as we go along since that's how it started. Thanks for making String Theory, we're both big fans :D

Gosh, I don’t know. Maybe set up a schedule sorta to kind of factory line it? By that I mean try and get a certain number of pages penciled in a day. If you’re just writing it as you go along the more pages you sketch out loosely the better so that you can read over them and make changes/corrections easily. Then set aside a time to do finishing. Switch it up if you start feeling burnt out, go back to penciling or writing. Include goofy references or inside jokes in the backgrounds to keep your attention on working.

Most important advice: no page will be perfect. The amount of art that goes into a single page means at best you’re gonna be at “I 80% don’t hate this.” If you’re on a time budget like with a class project you’re gonna have to learn when to move on.

Good luck on your comic, they’re hard work but they’re also pretty fun to do. Pretty rewarding once you’ve gotten a bunch done!

I looked at the last page of chapter five and Eric SMELLS LIKE MOULDY WET LEAVES AND THE CHICAGO FUNGUS INFECTION AND I WAS ALL READY TO MAKE A BIG DEAL ABOUT IT and then I read that he dropped his phone in the river. and he had a wet leaf stuck to his coat when she opened the door. Oh.
